You’re not sure where to start. What to tackle first. Who to meet with.

Why remote working tips won't cut it

Because 

There is a lot of virtual advice doing the rounds out there, especially the most popular kind of business tips and tricks, are hopelessly generic.

And that’s because, it’s not just, I’m not just talking about working from home and running online meetings.

As useful as the tips are about continuing to get yourself dressed for work in the morning, and to place post-it notes on your monitor to remind yourself to look directly at the camera, it simply doesn’t go deep enough for the type of specialist work that business analysts do.

The types of sessions we run – interviews, observations, workshops – these require a greater finesse than this level of guidance gives and it just doesn’t cut it for what we do. We have to appreciate the reality of how much deeper our engagement needs to go, and how much expertise is involved in our way of working, and the deep level of expertise we need.

Any any virtual elicitation system that kind of assumes if you can hold an effective meeting with an agenda and you know if you follow it right, if you hold eye contact, and smile, then at the end of the day you’ll have a completed set of requirements. Any system like that is hopelessly flawed.

Another really important point is that Virtual Elicitation is not another massive, complex, kind of closed method where you have to apply the whole thing in order for it to work.

And then that's supposed to make you a lot more effective.

What happens in in the real world is that you try to implement this system but it takes too much effort and too much time and maybe parts of the system don't match the way you work so you end up with kind of a 30% or 50% version of that system and of course because it's not the whole system it doesn't work and you give up and you go back to whatever you were doing before which was ineffective but at least not as frustrating.

So again having this kind of entire big closed system where you have to spend weeks just setting up the system to hopefully get more effective just doesn't work for most people.
